{"id":20,"date":"2014-05-22T14:20:00","date_gmt":"2014-05-22T14:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sherin.com\/professional-liability\/2014\/05\/22\/the-law-of-lawyering-according-to-lincoln-honest-at-all-events\/"},"modified":"2023-11-08T18:48:24","modified_gmt":"2023-11-08T18:48:24","slug":"the-law-of-lawyering-according-to-lincoln-honest-at-all-events","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sherin.com\/law-firm-defense\/2014\/05\/22\/the-law-of-lawyering-according-to-lincoln-honest-at-all-events\/","title":{"rendered":"The Law of Lawyering According to Lincoln: Honest At All Events"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"img-1400768614734\" class=\"alignRight\" style=\"float: right;\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/14169182_s.jpg\" alt=\"The Law of Lawyering\" width=\"336\" height=\"224\" border=\"0\" \/>The <a title=\"Pew Research Center\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pewforum.org\/2013\/07\/11\/public-esteem-for-military-still-high\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">Pew Research Center<\/a> recently revealed that only 18 percent of Americans feel that lawyers contribute a lot to the well-being of American society, proving that lawyers are the least liked profession in the country.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Those statistics are not just sad, they are disheartening.\u00a0 I suspect that they stem, at least in part, from the belief that lawyers are self-interested, pecuniary, and dishonest.\u00a0 I am fully convinced that nothing could be further from the truth and believe that, if the American public understood the ethical rules that ground and govern the practice of law, the widely accepted myth of the greedy, dishonest lawyer would crumble.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, while the rules of professional ethics are meant to insure that attorneys conduct themselves with the highest degree of professionalism, and a wealth of legal scholarship and analysis has been poured into considering the rules of ethics and the regulation of attorney conduct, the best, most concise, and most compelling instruction guide for lawyering was written by Abraham Lincoln:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">There is a vague popular belief that lawyers are necessarily dishonest.\u00a0 I say vague because when we consider to what extent confidence and honors are reposed in and conferred upon lawyers by the people, it appears improbable that their impression of dishonesty is very distinct and vivid, yet the impression is common, almost universal.\u00a0 Let no young man choosing the law for a calling for a moment yield to the popular belief \u2013 resolve to be honest at all events; and if in your own judgment you cannot be an honest lawyer, resolve to be honest without being a lawyer.\u00a0 Choose some other occupation, rather than one in the choosing of which you do, in advance, consent to be a knave.<\/p>\n<p>Other than living in a time when lawyers were only men \u2013 and thus failing to include women in his proscription against dishonesty \u2013 Lincoln got it squarely right.\u00a0 Lawyers should have an approval rating greater than 18 percent.\u00a0 Lawyers should, as a profession, be respected for their ethics and professionalism.\u00a0 Following Lincoln\u2019s rules on lawyering \u2013 <b><em>resolving to be honest at all events<\/em><\/b> \u2013 is the best start for us all.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Pew Research Center recently revealed that only 18 percent of Americans feel that lawyers contribute a lot to the well-being of American society, proving that lawyers are the least liked profession in the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":9,"featured_media":64,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"categories":[],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-20","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
