Daniel S. Guenther quoted in Law360 on World Cup dispute between FIFA and Foxborough
Daniel S. Guenther, partner in the firm’s Litigation Department, was quoted in a Law360 article titled, “FIFA May Be No Match For Town In World Cup Permit Spat.” This article discusses the recent dispute that occurred between FIFA and the town of Foxborough, Massachusetts due to the town requesting payment for security personnel and equipment from FIFA before granting them a license to host the games at Gillette Stadium this summer.
From the article:
Despite the war of words, outside observers expressed skepticism that it would spill into a court battle, citing the money at stake, the high-profile nature of the dispute and the town’s seemingly strong hand.
“I would be surprised if a court required a town to essentially act as a lender and commit millions of dollars for personnel and capital improvements for an event that no entity, even FIFA, has an absolute right to,” Guenther said. “I would be equally surprised if, given the local, state, federal and major private interests that intersect for an event like this, there was not an acceptable resolution prior to kickoff.”
