Edward S. Cheng quoted in Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly article on AI-generated law firm testimonials
Edward S. Cheng, partner in the Litigation Department, was quoted in a Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly article published on May 30, titled “Study: Boston at top in list of firms with AI-created testimonials.” This article is based upon the results of a study conducted by Canadian tech company Originality.ai, which found that 34.4 percent of law office reviews posted in 2025 were likely created by AI.
From the article:
If the Massachusetts Board of Bar Overseers were to receive a complaint that a law firm had a number of disturbingly similar reviews, Cheng says he’s confident investigators could determine whether ethical rules had been violated.
“If there’s a review praising a lawyer for the excellent job he or she did in obtaining a $2.4 million verdict last year, you could ask the lawyer, ‘Did you have a case with a $2.4 million verdict last year?’” Cheng suggests. “If he or she didn’t, then you could have a per se Rule 7.1 violation right there. He or she could argue that they didn’t put up the review, but if there’s a pattern, then one might be able to conclude that there were some shenanigans going on.”
