Brief Update on the Massachusetts Business Interruption Act (“Mass BI Act”)

By Joshua M. Bowman on May 5, 2020

Here is a brief update on the Massachusetts Business Interruption Insurance Act (the “Mass BI Act”). Since our last Client Alert on the Mass BI Act, the bill has been assigned to the Joint Committee on Financial Services. The Senate Chair is James T. Welch, D-Hampton, and the Senate Vice-Chair is Michael O. Moore, D-Second Worcester. The House Chair is James M. Murphy, D-4th Norfolk, and the House Vice-Chair is Christine P. Barber, D-34th Middlesex. As of today, the bill has 44 co-sponsors, consisting of 16 Senators and 28 Representatives. While the Mass BI Act is not on the fast-track, support for the bill and other government measures to help the hospitality continues to grow every day. The Sherin and Lodgen LLP Hospitality Practice Group will continue to monitor the Mass BI Act as it moves through the legislative process.
