Client Alert: Hotel and Restaurant Owners: How to Reduce Your Insurance Costs during the COVID-19 Crisis

Hotel and restaurant owners who, as a result of the COVID-19 crisis, have closed down or are operating only with extremely minimal staffing should consider discussing the possibility of reducing outstanding premium payments for their existing liability and workers’ compensation insurance policies with their insurance providers.

According to Peter Roblin of Roblin Insurance in Needham, Massachusetts, hotel and restaurant owners have the option to provide revised payroll and annual sales estimates to their insurers right now, which may result in such insurers lowering, by endorsement, the amount of outstanding premium payments that would be payable prior to the end of the policy period.

In addition, while insurers are presently under no legal obligation to agree to do so, hotel and restaurant owners should also consider discussing the deferral of unpaid insurance premiums with their insurance providers.
